Layout based on YUI Grids bring better browser support

A new version of the application has just now been deployed, which brings the page layout managed with YUI Grids. This should correct some problems with IE rendering. Let me know if you encounter any trouble, eg by filling the form below. I have notifications enabled on the form, so you should get fast response.

South America's Games using Myowndb

The 2010 edition of South America's Games (Juegos Suramericanos) will take place in Medellin from 19 to 30 march. They are using MyOwnDB to collect volunteers applications.

Notifications are now available!

A notification feature has been added to MyOwnDB, which currently lets you subscribe to new entry creations. Subscribing is very easy: go the the listing of the entries, and at the top you'll see a button labeled "Update Subscriptions" which will display the available subscriptions and their status. Currently, the only subscription proposed is for the creation of new entries, but the framework is very flexible and new notifications can be easily added.

CSV import and API: 2 news features!

Two new features have been rolled out, both having to do with getting data in and out of MyOwnDB. We're very excited about this! It is now possible to import data from a CSV file through a very simple procedure:
  1. upload your CSV file
  2. link columns in the CSV file to fields in your database table
  3. get an overview of the import: number of rows imported and number of rows rejected
Rows can be rejected due to data validation exceptions, for example:
  • trying to import text in an integer field
  • trying to import an invalid email add

A new home!

Today we migrated the myowndb application to new hardware. This change brings multiple benefits. One of them is that the server hosting the app until now was getting old. MyOwnDB was started more than 2 years ago now, and has been running on the same server since the launch. Although it's a good indication that you don't need high-end hardware to run this app, more recent hardware will let us improve performance, and bring more CPU intensive features. Another benefit is that with the migration, we took the opportunity to streamline the deployment of new versions.

Freedom in the cloud

Richard Stallman, the founder of the Free Software Foundation, launched a call for action concerning freedom and privacy in the cloud.

Slow Awakening

Hi all! Yes! MyOwnDB is not dead. It doesn't even smell funny. While it has been quiet here for some time, in the background a lot of work has been done by an expanded development team. Two important milestones will be reached soon
  1. Dedomenon, the core of MyOwnDB, gets a complete REST API making it the easiest web database to use in your mashups
  2. we are so proud of our code that in a couple of weeks we will release it in it's full glory under the Affero GPLv3 license. Now you can be absolutely sure your data will never be captured.

Famfamfam Silk icons used

I've deployed new icons in the application. These are Famfamfam Silk icons, a collection if 1000(!!) free (under the Creative Commons license) icons of really high quality, with very broad coverage. If you're looking for icons in your web application, you know where to go from now on. Note that the Silk icons are not the only ones available.

Eating my own dogfood with public forms

There's a feature in MyOwnDB that was there from the start, but maybe not publicised enough: you can publish a entry form for each of your tables. And in this form, you get all data validation! No bogus email will make it in your database! (well, email validation is regexp based, so it's not 100% safe, but it'll limit the errors). And I'm using this functionality in the contact page at

Export is here!

One important thing for us is to not take the data of MyOwnDB users as hostage. All data stored in MyOwnDB belongs to their respective users. As such, we found it as much a problem as some users that there was no export function. Well, this problem is no more. Although we plan to go much further, we currently provide the export of the data of a table to a csv file. You can export all data of a table or apply a filter to get only the data you want. We also added the possibility to export search results to csv files.
